Jun 23, 2017 · The remaining 2 electrons go on the central atom as a lone pair. However, to minimize formal charge, we use one lone pair from each oxygen to make pi bonds, constructing double bonds for each "S"-"O". This gives: Therefore, C is true, but D is also true without the pointless restriction of following the octet rule.

    c) Not the best structure as the 1 formal charge has been placed on the Br, not on the O. d) Incorrect; the Br is missing a non bonding pair of electrons. e) Incorrect; the O which bears the 1 formal charge has been given 9 electrons, in violation of the octet rule. The other two O’s should bear 1 formal charges. The correct answer is b).

The octet rule is a chemical rule of thumb that reflects the theory that main group elements tend to bond in such a way that each atom has eight electrons in its valence shell, giving it the same electronic configuration as a noble gas.

No. The P in PCl[math]_5[/math] has 10 valence electrons. The Octet “Rule” is really more of a rule of thumb - and one particularly for organic chemistry at that - than a “rule” rule. Aug 08, 2014 · The chlorine atoms obey the octet rule, but the phosphorus atom does not. In a molecule of phosphorus pentachloride, PCl_5, each chlorine atom ends up with an octet of electrons (four pairs), but the phosphorus atom ends up with ten electrons (five pairs).
